“Tony-winning director and playwright Mary Zimmerman wants you to know what you’re getting yourself into.”

I may be selling Mary Zimmerman a bit short here. Yes, she has a Tony, but she has also garnered a MacArthur grant and countless Chicago-area theater awards (lovingly dubbed “Jeffs”). Her CV boasts a collaboration with Philip Glass, she teaches at Northwestern University, and she holds the role of artistic associate at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre.

This February at the Goodman, Zimmerman distinguished artist premiered her loving and impishly miniaturized “matchbox” of Mozart’s Magic Flute.

Both frank and insightful, Zimmerman generously told me about why the Goodman Theatre was the right place for this work, conveyed her love for Mozart’s original, and shared why this production is nearly 30 years coming!
